Tub-to-Shower Conversion: Accessibility, Safety & Peace of Mind
This project was about far more than aesthetics — it was about giving a customer the independence and confidence to use their own bathroom safely every day.
The Challenge
The original 55-year-old bathtub was no longer a safe or practical option for this customer. The goal was to convert the space into a fully wheelchair-accessible walk-in shower, thoughtfully designed with safety at the forefront of every decision.
The Safety-First Design
Every detail of this build was driven by the customer's specific needs:
- Multiple grab bars and safety handles for stepping in, stepping out, and moving within the shower.
- A built-in foot rest for safe, stable bathing while working on legs and feet.
- A combination shampoo caddy and safety bar — functional and supportive at the same time.
- Shower curtain instead of glass doors or walls — a deliberate choice so that paramedics or emergency personnel could reach the customer quickly and without obstruction if ever needed.
The Build
I removed the original tub and tied new plumbing into the existing water supply and drain lines. To ensure the safety hardware would hold firmly for years to come, I installed substantial plywood backing behind the finished walls — giving every grab bar and handle a rock-solid anchor point.
The Result
A clean, bright, and modern shower that looks great and, more importantly, gives the customer the safety and independence they deserve — all delivered well within budget.
