Modernizing a Classic: A Functional IKEA Kitchen Transformation
While the original kitchen was functional, it felt dated and dark. The goal of this renovation was to "spice up" the aesthetic while significantly increasing the storage capacity and usability of the existing footprint.
The Design Strategy
To create visual interest, I installed the upper cabinets at multiple levels—stepping them up over the fridge and stove. This breaks up the horizontal lines and gives the kitchen a custom, architectural feel. We chose an IKEA system for its versatility, allowing us to take the cabinets right to the ceiling for maximum storage.
Hidden Functionality
It’s what’s on the inside that counts. I packed this kitchen with smart organizational features, including:
- A corner Lazy Susan to eliminate dead space.
- A built-in wine rack for a custom touch.
- A "drawer-within-a-drawer" system to maximize cutlery and tool storage without cluttering the face of the cabinetry.
- Large corner upper cabinets to utilize every inch of wall space.
The Result
By adding dimmable under-cabinet lighting and a new waterline for the ice maker, we didn't just change the look—we changed how the kitchen works. The result is a bright, clean, and highly efficient space that feels twice as large as the original.
